Why this session

Digital inclusion must start at an early age

We believe that empowering young girls with digital safety skills changes whole communities. Teenagers face unique challenges when they first start using online spaces. Young girls are often the most vulnerable to online harassment, scams, and privacy violations. This workshop set out to build their confidence. We wanted to give them the tools to navigate the internet safely and productively.

In June 2024, Digital Kala collaborated with the Rotaract Club of Balkumari. Together we organized a special session titled "Nurturing for Empowerment". The event took place at Shramik Shanti Secondary School. A total of 57 female students from Grade 6 to Grade 8 took part. The attendees were young teenagers aged 13 to 16 years old.

A partnership focused entirely on young girls

The Rotaract Club of Balkumari partnered with us to make this session possible. The administration of Shramik Shanti Secondary School hosted the event and opened its doors to the students. The session was led by Digital Kala team members Dipa Rai and Aastha Acharya. They broke down complex digital topics into easy lessons. Our team created a safe and open space for the students. The girls shared their own digital experiences and asked important questions about internet safety.

What we covered

We focused on the parts of online life that teenagers meet first.

Safe social media habits

Privacy on the apps girls actually use

The speakers taught the girls how to manage their privacy settings on popular apps. They explained how to block untrusted accounts. They also showed the students how to keep personal photos secure.

Recognizing online risks

Spotting harm and knowing how to report it

The students learned to identify cyberbullying, fake profiles, and online stranger danger. The trainers gave them clear steps on how to report these issues.

Digital confidence and growth

Using the internet to learn and grow

The session went beyond safety. Dipa and Aastha inspired the girls to use the internet for learning. They encouraged the students to explore online educational resources and build future skills.

In the room

Leaving more secure and empowered

The energy from the 57 participants at Shramik Shanti Secondary School was incredible. The girls asked questions openly and took part throughout the day.

By the end of the day, these young girls had gained the knowledge they needed to protect themselves online. They left the room feeling more secure and more empowered.
